Step-by-Step Fix
1. Verify You Are Signed Into the Correct Account
The most common reason Pro features appear locked is a wrong account mismatch. Perplexity supports multiple sign-in methods and it is easy to accidentally use a different one than the account that holds Pro.
- Click your profile icon in the top-right corner of
perplexity.ai - Note the email address or account name displayed
- Compare that to the email on your Stripe receipt (the payment confirmation email from Perplexity)
- If they do not match: click Sign Out, then sign in using the exact method shown on your receipt (Google, Apple, or email/password)
This is the correct fix in approximately 40% of cases where Pro features appear locked.
2. Sign Out and Sign Back In to Refresh Your Session
If you are on the correct account but features are still locked:
- Click your profile icon → Sign Out
- Close all
perplexity.aitabs in your browser - Open a new tab and go to
perplexity.ai - Sign in again
- After signing in, navigate to the search interface (the main page)
- Look for the model selector dropdown next to the search bar
- Go to Settings → Subscription and confirm it shows "Pro"
A fresh sign-in forces a new session token that reads your current Pro status from the database.
3. Full Checklist of Pro Features to Verify
After signing back in, confirm each Pro feature is available:
Model selector:
- Location: dropdown next to the search bar on the main page
- Should show options including GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Sonar Large
- If greyed out or missing: session sync issue — repeat Step 2
File uploads:
- Location: attachment/paperclip icon in or near the search bar
- Should allow PDF, TXT, CSV, image uploads
- If missing: sign out and back in; if still missing, try a different browser
Deep Research:
- Location: dropdown or option near the search bar (may say "Deep Research" or show as a search mode)
- Should show your monthly usage counter (e.g., "18/20 remaining")
- If showing a very low limit (0–3 instead of up to 20): session sync issue
Pro search counter:
- Location: visible near the model selector or search bar on Pro accounts
- Should indicate 300/day with a usage counter
- If showing 5/day: your session still reads as Free
Priority access:
- During peak periods, Pro users queue ahead of Free users
- This is not visible but manifests as faster response times during congested periods
4. Check If Your Plan Is Actually Active in Settings
Navigate to perplexity.ai/settings → Subscription and read each field:
- Plan name: Must say "Pro" — if it says "Free," your subscription did not activate (see the Pro not activated article)
- Billing amount: $20/month or $200/year
- Next billing date: A specific calendar date — if no date is shown, the subscription may have already ended
- Payment method: Shows your card or PayPal — if blank, there may be a payment setup issue
If the Settings page shows Free despite a successful payment: email support@perplexity.ai with your receipt.
If the Settings page shows Pro but features are locked: this is the session mismatch covered in Steps 1–2.
5. Test Features After a Fresh Sign-In
Verify the fix worked with a quick feature check:
- From the main search page, click the model selector dropdown next to the search bar
- Select GPT-4o or Claude 3.5 Sonnet from the list
- Type a test question and press Enter
- If the response is generated using GPT-4o or Claude: Pro is working correctly
- If you see a "Pro required" prompt despite selecting a Pro model: your session still does not reflect Pro — clear browser cache (see Step 6) and try again
6. Clear Browser Cache as a Last Resort
If signs-out/sign-in did not fix the locked features:
Chrome:
- Address bar: type
chrome://settings/privacy→ Delete browsing data - Set time range to Last 24 hours
- Check Cookies and other site data + Cached images and files
- Click Delete data
Firefox:
- Click the lock icon in the address bar on
perplexity.ai - Click Clear cookies and site data for perplexity.ai
After clearing, sign in fresh and test the model selector again.
7. Contact Support If Features Remain Locked
If all the above steps fail after 30 minutes from your subscription time:
Email: support@perplexity.ai
Subject: "Pro subscription active but features locked — Account: [your email]"
Include:
- Your account email
- Screenshot of Settings → Subscription showing "Pro"
- Description of which specific features are locked (model selector, file uploads, Deep Research)
- Confirmation that you have tried signing out and back in, and cleared browser cache
Feature Unlock Troubleshooting by Feature Type
Different Pro features lock for different reasons. Use this breakdown to target your fix:
Model selector missing or greyed out: This is the clearest indicator of a session problem. If Settings shows Pro but the model dropdown is absent or restricted, your session token has not refreshed. Fix: sign out → close all tabs → sign back in. If still missing after sign-in, try a different browser — if it works there, the issue is browser-specific (likely a cached script).
File upload button not appearing: The attachment/paperclip icon only appears in the search bar when Pro is recognized by your session. If it is missing: same fix as model selector (sign out, sign back in). Also confirm you are on the web app at perplexity.ai — mobile browsers may display the upload option differently than desktop.
Deep Research not available or showing wrong limit: If Deep Research shows 0 remaining and your billing date was recent, your counter may not have reset yet — the reset happens at midnight UTC on your billing date, not immediately when the billing date arrives. Wait until the next UTC midnight. If the counter shows the Free tier limit (2–3) instead of 20, that is a session sync issue — sign out and back in.
Pro searches capped at 5 instead of 300: This definitively means your session is operating on Free-plan limits. Even if Settings shows Pro, the search interface is using a cached Free token. Sign out and back in. If the 5-search limit persists in multiple browsers after a fresh sign-in, email support with a screenshot of both your Settings page (showing Pro) and the search interface (showing 5/day limit).
Priority access not working: Priority access is not visually indicated — it affects queue position during peak load. You cannot directly verify it is working. If Pro is otherwise confirmed active (model selector visible, 300 searches/day showing), priority access is also active. There is no separate toggle or confirmation.
Why This Happens
Perplexity's architecture separates the subscription database from the session token system. When you subscribe, Stripe notifies Perplexity's backend, which updates the subscription database. However, your active browser session uses a token that was generated at your last sign-in — that token does not automatically update when your subscription changes. The session token contains your plan status (Free or Pro) at the time it was issued. After subscribing, your existing session token still says Free because it was generated before the payment. A new sign-in generates a new token that reads your current (Pro) subscription status from the database. This is why signing out and back in is the universal fix for locked Pro features.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Refreshing the page to unlock features. A refresh reloads the same session token — it does not issue a new one. You must sign out and sign back in to get a fresh token that reflects your Pro status.
- Assuming locked features mean the subscription did not go through. Features can be locked even with a fully active and paid Pro subscription if the session token is stale. Check Settings → Subscription first before concluding there is a billing issue.
- Signing in with a different method than checkout. Perplexity's Google, Apple, and email sign-in methods each create separate accounts. Using a different sign-in method lands you on a different account — the Pro features will not appear because that different account is on Free.
- Not checking the model selector specifically. The model selector is the clearest indicator of Pro status — if it is visible and lets you choose GPT-4o or Claude, Pro is active. If it is absent, your session is not reflecting Pro. Do not rely on the search counter alone as a Pro indicator.
- Contacting support before trying the sign-out fix. In over 90% of cases, signing out and back in resolves locked Pro features without any support involvement. Support response times are 1–3 business days — the self-service fix takes 30 seconds.
