1. Understand the Three Perplexity Plans
Perplexity operates three distinct tiers. Knowing which features belong to which tier prevents confusion about missing functionality.
Free Plan — No Cost

2. Compare Monthly vs Annual Billing

The annual plan is identical in features to the monthly plan — the only difference is the billing cycle and the $40 savings. Annual billing is charged as a single transaction of $200/year.
3. How to Upgrade to Pro
- Go to
perplexity.ai/settings - Click Subscription in the left sidebar
- Click Upgrade to Pro
- Choose Monthly ($20/month) or Annual ($200/year)
- Enter your card details or select PayPal in the Stripe checkout modal
- Click Subscribe to complete the purchase
- Wait up to 5 minutes for Pro to activate — if it takes longer, sign out and back in
Your Pro features become active immediately after payment is processed. Perplexity sends a confirmation email with a Stripe receipt to the email address on your account.
4. How to Downgrade from Pro to Free
Downgrading means canceling your Pro subscription. Perplexity does not offer a mid-tier plan between Free and Pro.

- Confirm the cancellation in the dialog box
- Your Pro access continues until the end of the current billing period
- After the period ends, your account automatically reverts to the Free plan
You will not receive a prorated refund for unused days in the current billing period unless you contact support@perplexity.ai within 30 days of the original charge and this is your first cancellation request.
5. Verify Your Current Plan and Usage
To check which plan you are on and how many Pro searches you have remaining:
- Go to
perplexity.ai/settings→ Subscription - Your current plan is displayed prominently at the top — "Free" or "Pro"
- For Pro users, the page shows your next billing date and billing cycle
- To see how many Pro searches you have used today, look for the usage indicator in the search interface — a small counter appears near the model selector when you are on Pro
6. What to Do if the Wrong Plan Is Showing
If you paid for Pro but your account still shows Free:
- Check that you are signed into the correct account — your Pro subscription is tied to the email shown on your Stripe receipt
- Sign out completely and sign back in
- Wait 5–10 minutes and hard-refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R)
- If still showing Free after 30 minutes, email support@perplexity.ai with your payment receipt and current account email
Why This Happens
Perplexity's three-tier system is designed around the compute cost of different AI models. Standard searches use Perplexity's own Sonar model, which is optimized for cost efficiency. Pro searches route your query to more powerful third-party models (GPT-4o, Claude) that cost significantly more per query to run. This is why the daily Pro search limit exists even on the paid plan — 300 is the cap Perplexity has set to maintain service quality at the $20/month price point.
Deep Research reports are even more compute-intensive because they run multiple search passes and synthesis steps — hence the separate monthly limit of 20.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming Pro removes all search limits. Pro increases Pro searches from 5/day to 300/day, but this cap still exists. Standard searches using the default Sonar model remain unlimited on both Free and Pro.
- Forgetting that the annual plan charges $200 upfront. Unlike monthly billing which charges $20 per month, the annual plan charges the full $200 on the day you subscribe. Make sure you intend to use the service for at least 10 months before choosing annual billing.
- Missing the model selector dropdown. Many Pro users do not realize they can choose which AI model powers each search. Look for the model selector dropdown next to the search bar — it defaults to Sonar but can be changed to GPT-4o or Claude 3.5 Sonnet for each query.
- Counting Pro searches against the wrong clock. The 300 Pro searches per day reset at midnight UTC, not at midnight in your local timezone. If you are in the US Eastern time zone, that means your Pro search counter resets at 8:00 PM EST (7:00 PM during summer/EDT).
- Not comparing annual vs monthly before subscribing. If you plan to use Perplexity Pro for more than 10 months, the annual plan saves you money. You can switch from monthly to annual at any time through the Settings page.
