Step-by-Step Fix for Perplexity Password Login Not Working
Password-based login on Perplexity can fail in several distinct ways. Identifying which scenario applies to you is the most important first step, because the fix is different for each.
Step 1 — Identify the Error Message
Before doing anything else, read the exact error message shown:
- "Incorrect password" — the email was found but the password does not match. Go to Step 2.
- "No account found with this email" or similar — the email is not registered. Go to Step 3.
- "Please log in with Google/Apple" — the account exists but was created via OAuth, not password. Go to Step 4.
- No error but button does nothing — a browser or extension issue. Go to Step 5.
- Account temporarily locked — too many failed attempts. Go to Step 6.
Step 2 — Reset Your Password
If the password is rejected, the safest fix is a fresh reset rather than guessing.
- Go to perplexity.ai/login.
- Click Forgot password? below the login fields.
- Enter your registered email address and click Send reset link.
- Open your email inbox. Look for a message from noreply@perplexity.ai — it arrives within 5 minutes.
- Check your spam or junk folder if you do not see it in your inbox.
- Click the link in the email. It expires after 1 hour, so use it promptly.
- Set a new password. Use at least 8 characters including a mix of letters and numbers.
- Return to perplexity.ai/login and sign in with your email and new password.
Step 3 — Confirm Your Registered Email Address
If Perplexity says no account was found:
- Check whether you might have used a different email address. Try searching your inbox for any email from perplexity.ai to find the address you signed up with.
- Check whether your email has aliases — some users register with a Google Workspace alias or an Apple private relay address (ending in @privaterelay.appleid.com) rather than their main email.
- Try the Forgot password flow with different email variations to find which one Perplexity has on file.
- If you truly cannot find the registered email, contact support@perplexity.ai for account lookup.
Step 4 — Check Whether Your Account Uses Google or Apple Login
If your account was created with "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Apple," no Perplexity password exists for it.
- Try clicking Continue with Google on the login page. If you get in, your account is Google-linked.
- Try clicking Continue with Apple. If you get in, your account is Apple-linked.
- Once logged in via OAuth, go to Settings → Account to see which login method is attached to your account.
- If you want a password login, contact support@perplexity.ai to request a method switch.
Step 5 — Rule Out Browser and Autofill Issues
Password managers and autofill can cause silent login failures.
- Clear any autofilled values from the email and password fields by clicking and pressing Ctrl+A then Delete.
- Type your email and password manually — do not paste or use autofill.
- Check that Caps Lock is off (the password field is case-sensitive).
- Disable your password manager extension temporarily and try again.
- If the login button still does not respond, try the same credentials in an incognito window to rule out extensions blocking the request.
Step 6 — Wait Out a Temporary Account Lockout
After multiple wrong password attempts, Perplexity may temporarily block login.
- Stop entering wrong passwords immediately — more attempts extend the lockout.
- Wait 15–30 minutes before trying again.
- Better yet, use the Forgot password link now to set a new password, which bypasses the lockout.
- If the lockout persists beyond 2 hours, contact support@perplexity.ai for manual unlock.
Step 7 — Clear Browser Cache and Try Again
A cached login state can sometimes interfere with fresh login attempts.
- Open your browser settings and clear cookies/cache for perplexity.ai.
- Reload perplexity.ai/login.
- Try logging in fresh with your email and password.
Step 8 — Recover a Fully Inaccessible Account
If you cannot log in by any method — password fails, OAuth does not recognize your account, and the password reset email never arrives — your account may be locked or tied to an email you no longer control.
- Search every email inbox you own (including old Gmail accounts and any Apple private relay addresses ending in @privaterelay.appleid.com) for any message from perplexity.ai
- Once you find the registered email, attempt the password reset flow or OAuth login from that address
- If the registered email account is no longer accessible (deleted account, former employer email), email support@perplexity.ai — include any billing records, Pro subscription confirmation emails, or other proof of account ownership
- Perplexity's support team can verify your identity through payment records and may be able to re-link the account to a new email address, but this is handled case-by-case and takes 24 to 48 hours
Step 9 — Handle "Account Linked to OAuth, Cannot Use Password"
If Perplexity indicates your account was created with Google or Apple and you cannot use email/password:
- First, confirm by logging in with the correct OAuth method (Google or Apple) — this proves you own the account
- Once logged in, go to Settings → Account to see your current linked login method
- There is no self-service option in settings to add a password to an OAuth account
- To add email/password authentication, email support@perplexity.ai and request a login method addition — Perplexity will require you to verify ownership via your existing OAuth login before making changes
- While waiting for support, continue using your OAuth login — all Pro features and history remain fully accessible regardless of which login method is attached
Step 10 — Contact Support
If none of the above resolves the issue, email support@perplexity.ai with:
- The email address you are trying to log in with
- The exact error message you see
- Whether you have ever successfully logged in before
- Which sign-in method you used when you created the account
- Whether you have a Pro subscription and on which email it is registered
Password Security Best Practices for Perplexity
If you use email/password login on Perplexity, these practices reduce the chance of future login failures:
- Use a password manager. Generate and store a unique password for Perplexity using a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane). This eliminates the "I forgot which password I used" problem entirely.
- Verify the saved URL. Make sure your password manager saves the entry for perplexity.ai specifically, not a variant like perplexity.com or www.perplexity.ai — subtle URL differences can cause autofill failures.
- Save the registered email address alongside the password. If your login email changes in the future, update the password manager entry immediately.
- Use the password reset proactively. If you have not logged in for several months and are unsure whether your password is still correct, reset it before you urgently need access — the reset process takes under 5 minutes when you have access to your email.
Why This Happens
Perplexity offers three login methods: Google OAuth, Apple ID, and email/password. When users mix up which method they used at registration, password login fails because the account may not have a password at all — it uses Google or Apple as the identity provider instead. Additionally, password resets via the "Forgot password" link only work for email/password accounts. Because these scenarios produce similar-looking errors, users often assume the problem is a wrong password when the real issue is the wrong login method entirely. Accounts created via Google OAuth cannot use the password reset flow because there is no Perplexity password to reset — the reset would create a separate disconnected credential that does not link to the Google-authenticated account.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the password reset link for an OAuth account — if your account is Google-linked, the password reset email will either not arrive or result in a disconnected account state. Use Google login instead.
- Trying to log in with your Google password — Perplexity's email/password is separate from your Google account password. They are completely different credentials, even if you use the same email address.
- Ignoring the spam folder — Perplexity's reset emails from noreply@perplexity.ai frequently land in spam, especially for Gmail accounts with aggressive filtering. Always check spam before assuming the email did not send.
- Waiting too long to use the reset link — password reset links expire after 1 hour. If you request a reset and then check email an hour later, you will need to request a new link.
- Autofilling wrong credentials — password managers sometimes store multiple entries for the same domain and autofill the wrong one. Manually type your credentials at least once to confirm.
- Assuming Caps Lock is off — password fields mask characters, making it impossible to see if Caps Lock is on. Always verify before submitting.
- Deleting the OAuth-linked account to "start fresh" with a password account — deleting your account removes your Pro subscription, conversation history, and settings permanently. Contact support to add a password to your existing account instead.
